Driver’s Licence

Your Ontario driver’s licence authorizes you to operate motor vehicles according to the class and conditions printed on the card. Law enforcement and insurers may verify your status electronically. Carry a valid physical or approved digital credential when driving as required by law.

Renewal and upgrades

Renew before expiry to avoid driving without a valid licence. Upgrading class (for example to commercial classes) requires knowledge tests, road tests, and medical standards. Medical reporting obligations apply for certain conditions as set out in Ontario regulation.

Corrective-lens conditions mean you must wear glasses or contacts whenever you drive; failing to do so invalidates the licence class in enforcement narratives even if the plastic card looks valid. Digital credentials and wallet apps may lag behind plastic issuance—always know which format police accept in your jurisdiction.

Driver’s licence — classes, medical fitness, and fraud

Ontario’s graduated licensing adds conditions for new drivers; demerit points, suspensions, and ignition interlock programs layer on top.

Medical review can downgrade or suspend classes when vision, seizures, or substances make driving unsafe—distinct from criminal impaired-driving sanctions.

Licences double as common photo ID for address changes, though health and tax systems still need their own updates (change of address).
