OHIP & travel coverage
OHIP covers many medically necessary services in Ontario. Coverage outside the province or country has important limits. Plan ahead for travel and keep your health card valid.
Students should rehearse the difference between emergency portability (often funded when you show a valid provincial card elsewhere in Canada) and elective care (usually billed to your home province after return, with waits and paperwork). Abroad, provincial plans are not substitutes for travel medical insurance—read exclusion clauses for adventure sports, pregnancy, and mental health.
Within Canada
Urgent and emergent physician and hospital services are often covered when you present a valid OHIP card in another Canadian province or territory; elective care may not be funded.
Outside Canada
OHIP generally does not pay for non-emergency care abroad. Purchase private travel health insurance for trips outside Canada.
Extended absence from Ontario
Extended absence from Ontario can affect OHIP eligibility; review Ministry rules before long travel or relocation.

Long work assignments, education abroad, or snowbird seasons can affect provincial residency. Before you leave, verify how to maintain eligibility and how to resume coverage on return—especially if you cancel a lease or sell a home in Ontario.
